Butte County Historical Society
Come by and see the old hydraulic mining monitor that has been in pieces on the porch of the BCHS museum.  Our hero, Jack Lindsay, hunted until he found the just-right replacement for a missing bolt, and he has put it back together, all 1500 pounds of cast iron.  It is bolted to the porch floor with its nozzle raised towards the hills.

The heyday of hydraulic mining was from about 1854-1884, resuming on a more limited basis after 1893.  A search in the collection records of our archives reveals that this monitor was used around the Forest Hill and Michigan Bluff areas on the Middle Fork of the American River and possibly later at Cherokee in Butte County.

The monitor was donated to BCHS in 1974 by Mrs. Dorothy Ingram and the Ingram family, in memory of Wendel Durham Ingram of Gridley.  We are extremely fortunate to have an example of the rare type of artifact.

In 1989 Alice Benton of Washington donated a Seth Thomas schoolhouse clock to the Butte County Historical Society.  It has just been displayed for the first time in the BCHS Museum and is now a part of the "Banking In Oroville" exhibit.  The clock was given to Alice's father, C. E. Hollis, by Bertha Staulter.  Bertha Staulter was a cleaning lady for the Bidwells.  The clock was purchased by Annie Bidwell on September 19, 1885.  It was in John Bidwell's blacksmith shop until he gave it to Berth Staulter.
